Typesetter, Indexer, Researcher

A photo of a man with a long beard looking through used books outside a store in Tokyo.

I'm Tom — I completed my PhD in social anthropology at the University of Manchester in 2023 on contemporary spirituality. I am now an independent researcher, typesetter, indexer, and occasional translator based in the UK.

My research speciality is using cutting-edge anthropological theory to frame religious movements, particularly divination and esotericism, in their social and cosmological contexts.

Currently, I'm chasing research in language acquisition, large language models, global esotericism and divination methods, and Pure Land Buddhism.

Formerly, I organised DIY community-based arts exhibitions and performance events, and I have performed experimental and avant-garde electronic music in several venues, including Manchester Art Gallery.

Mi ankaŭ estas Esperantisto — mi estis publikigita en Monato, kaj mi skribas dulingvan blogon.

When I'm not doing the above, I'm learning languages (specifically improving my Japanese and Literary Chinese), editing others' texts, writing crumbs of fiction, or teaching people to use and understand AI tools.
